Hamburg Airport handled around 2021 passengers in October 953.000. This value corresponds roughly to 58 percent of the performance that could be achieved in 2019. Compared to October 2020 - 322.000 travelers - it was much stronger this year.

“In the summer, the number of passengers was still well below expectations. Now October surprised with a level of traffic that was well above summer. It is still too early to speak of a trend reversal. But the positive signals are increasing and business travelers are slowly returning too. We are particularly pleased that the US will open again to European travelers on November 8th. And the fact that Emirates is bringing the world's largest passenger aircraft back to Hamburg with the A380 emphasizes the increasing demand, ”explains Managing Director Michael Eggenschwiler.

In October 2021, Hamburg Airport recorded around 953.000 passengers in just one month, almost as many passengers as in the entire first half of the year (January-June 2021: around 1,06 million passengers). Many northern Germans were drawn to sunny holiday regions such as Turkey, Spain and the Greek islands, which were very popular this year. At the moment it can be assumed that the strong upswing will weaken again in November, but that the traffic figures will remain stable above the previous year's level. Hamburg Airport currently expects around 5,5 million passengers for the year as a whole (2019: 17,31 million). The forecast was revised downwards after the first few months of the year.

“Despite this bright spot in the Corona year 2021, we are still a long way from normal regular operations. Both short-term bookings and fluctuating occupancy are still a challenge. During the autumn holidays, we reached traffic peaks by the hour that exceeded the level of 2019 - after that, operations paused again for the time being. This makes it difficult to plan the deployment of staff for all system partners. It is thanks to the extraordinarily good preparation and cooperation of all those responsible that operations in Hamburg run smoothly - despite the still difficult framework conditions and high peak utilization, ”said Eggenschwiler.
