Public transport: ÖBB is thinning out in the eastern region, VBB is revamping bus routes

Since Monday, February 12, 2024, the Austrian Federal Railways have reduced services in the greater Vienna area by around 1,9 percent. On average, around 50 connections are lost every day.

According to the ÖBB, the background to the measure is that numerous sets are in lengthy maintenance and they want to bring stability to the timetable. Between Mödling and Wiener Neustadt Hbf, three early train connections on Monday to Friday until March 1, 2024 will be operated by Österreichische Postbus AG on behalf of ÖBB in the form of a rail replacement service with buses. The ÖBB has recently been in the crossfire of criticism in the eastern region because many connections have been canceled every day.

Another change affects bus lines 1155 and 7941, which run from Vienna via Wiener Neustadt to Central Burgenland. These were previously offered by Österreichische Postbus AG and Blaguss Reisen GmbH under their own concession. Verkehrsbetriebe Burgenland GmbH took over both lines on January 1, 2024 and has now begun the renovation. In the future, line 1155 will no longer start in Vienna, but in Wiener Neustadt. There are also significant changes for passengers on other routes. These are not just new line signals, but courses and routes have been modified. Further information can be found directly on the VBB information page.
