The corona pandemic led to a sharp decline in trips to Germany and abroad in Austria. A comparison of the figures shows, however, that there were more tourist trips within Austria in the summer of the previous year than in 2019.

Statistics Austria's “bare figures” clearly show the impact of the corona pandemic. In the first three months of 2019, there were still 2.051.00 domestic and 981.000 vacations abroad. These collapsed significantly in the second quarter. A look at the third quarter shows that stays in Germany were preferred.

For comparison: In the record year 2019, there were always more holidays abroad in the warm season, significantly more than in the same period in 2020. The exact figures are shown in the table below. The fact that in the cold season of the year people spend most of their holidays inland is also due to the fact that Austria is a winter sports enthusiast and the local ski areas are often used.

If you look at the first two quarters of the current year, you can see the effects of the entry and quarantine regulations in the first three quarters. According to Statistics Austria, there were only 155.000 vacations abroad. For comparison: in 2019 it was 1.348.00 and in the same period of the previous year it was 981.000.

There was an initial upturn abroad from the second quarter of 2021. Accordingly, there were 992.000 holiday trips outside of Austria. In the same period of 2020 it was 290.00. However, it was miles away from the value that it had achieved in 2019 (2.976 foreign vacations).

The statistics for the third quarter of the current year are not yet available. It therefore remains to be seen whether the Austrians have opted for vacations at home or abroad this year. In general, however, it can be deduced that mobility was higher this year than in "Corona year I".
