After Germany, Austria is now declaring the Spanish Balearic Islands a corona risk area. A corresponding travel warning will apply from Monday, August 24, 2020. As a result, returnees will have to present a negative corona test when re-entering the Alpine republic or have to go into quarantine for ten days.
There is already a travel warning for the entire Spanish mainland. Now this has also been extended to Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Only when returning from the Canary Islands is currently neither a corona test nor quarantine necessary, as there is no travel warning for this area.
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) announced that next week there will be free corona tests for those returning from the Balearic Islands. Those that are currently still available free of charge for holidaymakers who have returned to Austria from Croatia are very well received, according to him. In the past few days, around 7.000 people who were previously in Croatia were tested free of charge. Numerous asymptomatic cases were found.
With regard to the travel warning for the Balearic Islands, Anschober also said: "The Ballermann is simply the best friend of the coronavirus." With this statement, the minister alluded to the fact that the average age of infected travelers returning is 23,5 years. According to Anschober, 262 people who tested positive within the last nine days can be traced back to infections abroad, for example in Croatia and Spain.
