It's finally here: the government is launching the first official app for the Green Passport. The application is initially only available in the App Store.

At the start of the EU-compliant certificates within the European Union, the Federal Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, in cooperation with the Bundesrechenzentrum GmbH, is providing all citizens with the Green Pass as a digital application free of charge. This is an app that enables storage and secure handling on the smartphone as well as simple presentation of the EU-compliant certificates including QR code when entering and traveling within the European Union.

“The implementation of the Green Pass took place gradually. We started with the individual certificates, on the occasion of the EU-wide start an app is now also available. Since the Green Pass certificates are particularly sensitive health data, we had to observe strict legal framework conditions in the development of the app. My department not only has a health policy, but also a socio-political mandate for data protection. I am pleased that with the 'Grüner Pass' app we can now present an application that guarantees the best possible protection of health data, ”explains Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein.

No saving of health data in the cloud

The new app solution saves and processes the data of the EU-compliant certificates exclusively offline, i.e. only on the end user's mobile phone. Only essential information is then displayed in the app, such as first name, last name, COVID-19 vaccine and the EU-compliant QR code. The certificates are not stored in a cloud, as is usually the case with app solutions. This ensures that all EU-wide and national data protection obligations are complied with.

First impression:

Apparently, many companies are working on such digital solutions. Because if you simply enter “Green Pass” in the App Store, a multitude of such applications will appear. Just not the right one. Therefore, when looking for the right app, particular attention should be paid to the developer. The best thing to do is to simply enter “BRZ GmbH” in the search bar, then the right application should appear right away. Once you have overcome this smaller hurdle, the rest is very easy: simply scan the QR code of the certificate in PDF format with the mobile phone camera, the app does the rest. From now on, the evidence will be displayed directly on the home page.

Has Apple bought the government? Around 70% of users have Android on their mobile phones. And they stay ahead for now. Not understandable for me.
