OMV and Airbus have signed a letter of intent to work together on the decarbonization of aviation. The focus of the partnership is the promotion of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which cause on average 80 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions over their life cycle than conventional kerosene. The cooperation, which runs from 2025 to 2030, aims to accelerate the production and use of SAF and promote investments in new plants.
One focus is on motivating customers to switch to SAF, increasing demand and developing efficient approval and production processes. Both companies see this as an opportunity to fundamentally change aviation. OMV already produces SAF at the Schwechat refinery and has signed long-term supply agreements for 1,5 million tons of SAF until 2030. Airbus plans to use the partnership to advance the global use of SAF in aviation.
Martijn von Koten, member of the Executive Board at OMV, and Julie Kitcher, Head of Sustainability at Airbus, emphasized in statements the importance of cross-industry cooperation for the success of such projects. The collaboration should not only advance technological innovations, but also accelerate the decarbonization of the industry.
With the partnership, the two companies want to send a strong signal for the future of aviation and at the same time strengthen their role in the development of sustainable solutions.
