Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport will not have a fourth terminal, at least for the time being. The construction project worth around nine billion euros has been canceled. The French environment minister told the daily Le Monde that the project is "out of date".
The government is of the opinion that the monstrous construction project cannot be reconciled with current climate targets. The fourth terminal should have been completed by 2037 at the latest. Before the corona pandemic, the number of passengers was expected to rise sharply, so that Paris-Charle de Gaulle would soon have reached its capacity limit again. They just wanted to prevent that.
However, Corona has meant that Europe's second largest airport has passenger numbers that have larger regional airports in normal times. In the long term, France does not expect the values of the record year 2019 to be reached again quickly. At the same time, the government wants to seize the opportunity and enforce tough climate protection requirements.
Accordingly, Aéroports de Paris was commissioned to design a new concept for the future. In this, the aspects of climate protection should also play a major role. In particular, carbon dioxide emissions should be greatly reduced. The operator commented soberly that they “took note of” the decision of the French government.
