The sound of a bag of chips bursting on July 2, 2023 on Jet2 flight LS124 caused a passenger to lose his nerve and imagine there was a bomb on board. In his panic he even tried to open an emergency exit door, but the crew and other passengers intervened.

On July 2, 2023, the Boeing 2-737 operated by Jet800, registration G-JZHE, was en route from Bodrum to Glasgow. At first it looked like a normal return flight from a holiday destination. But then a traveler opened a bag of chips and there was a soft bang.

This was heard from the "unruly PAX", who, according to eyewitnesses, gave the impression that he was very drunk, and the dilemma took its course. The male passenger was absolutely convinced that there was a bomb on board because he had heard an "explosion". He also said that a flight attendant gave a "secret signal". In truth, she only scratched her face, but the panicked "unruly PAX" didn't want to admit that.

In a mixture of drunk and panic, he tried to open an emergency exit door from his seat, which was in an exit row. An elderly man and a woman are said to have stopped him before the cabin crew intervened. The incident was reported to the captain, who decided that the unruly PAX had to disembark immediately. For this reason, a stopover was made in Sofia, where the executive took the troublemaker away.

According to eyewitnesses, the Jet2 crew acted extremely professionally and purposefully. The situation was quickly de-escalated, but understandably the misconduct was one size too many, which is why the captain's decision to make a stopover in Sofia for safety reasons is absolutely understandable and appropriate.

The carrier issued the following statement: "Flight LS124 from Bodrum to Glasgow was diverted to Sofia Airport on 2 July 2023 to allow a troubled passenger to be removed from the aircraft by police. After a short delay, the flight continued to Glasgow. We would like to apologize to all affected customers for the inconvenience caused. As a family-friendly airline, we do not tolerate disruptive behavior from any passenger, and the health, comfort and well-being of all passengers is always our top priority."
