The Maltese airline Universal Air intends to offer non-stop flights to Munich, Corfu and Luqa from the Hungarian regional airport Pécs in the 2024 summer timetable. These are to be served with de Havilland Dash 8.

There have been no regular scheduled flights from Pécs Airport for many years. Until the early 2000s, Tyrolean Airways offered feeder flights to the AUA hub in Vienna, but the ultra-short-haul service was discontinued. People have been waiting for the comeback on the line for about 16 years. There are always occasional charter flights.

With a runway length of only 1.500 meters, it is almost unsuitable for the medium-haul Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 jets used by low-cost airlines. The Jets would potentially be subject to payload restrictions. Surprisingly, the Maltese Universal Air has now announced three scheduled routes from Pécs at a press conference.

Initially it will go to Munich on Tuesday and Wednesday from March 26, 2024. As of May 15, 2024, a circulation will be added, which will be carried out every Wednesday. On the same day there will also be a flight connection to the Greek island of Corfu, which will also be served on Wednesday.

Universal Air plans to offer two weekly flights between Luqa (Malta) and Pécs from March 26, 2024. These should be operated on Tuesday and Friday. The three routes will be flown with de Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft. The Maltese carrier will soon add a sixth model to its fleet.

Upon request, Pécs Airport stated that Universal Air will start selling tickets on March 1, 2024. The tickets will then be available online, via the app and through travel agencies.

We in Munich are happy about any initiative for new connections. However, the low frequencies (Tues and Wed) raise doubts as to whether the new connection will be a lasting success.
The destinations Munich, Malta and Corfu are also a strange mix.
