The IAG group member British Airways is thinning out the 2022/23 winter flight schedule. In the period between the end of October 2022 and the end of March 2023, around 1.000 short- and medium-haul flights were withdrawn from sale.
The vast majority of the cuts will affect services ex London Heathrow. Flights from Gatwick are also said to be affected, but significantly fewer. In October 2022, a total of 629 connections are to be dropped. These should primarily be applied to the European offer, but according to British Airways there will also be cuts on long-haul routes.
The company explained, among other things, that the cancellations are intended to reduce the frequency of delays and cancellations. Both British Airways and the service providers at Heathrow and Gatwick airports are suffering from acute staff shortages. It was only recently announced that the UK's largest airport has increased its daily passenger cap extended again.
However, British Airways emphasizes that holiday flights, which are traditionally in high demand during the autumn holidays, should not be affected by the recent cancellations. It is assumed that due to the fact that the flight schedule adjustments are made early on, it will be possible to offer alternative transportation to all those affected.
