In several traditional restaurants in the centre of Lisbon, there are significant price differences between tourists and locals.
According to a report by Portuguese newspaper Expresso, foreign guests are given more expensive menus, while Portuguese locals benefit from reduced prices. An employee of a restaurant in the historic Baixa explained that a simple snack for tourists can cost up to 15 euros, while a full menu for locals is only 9,90 euros.
The cheaper prices for locals are usually communicated through verbal cues, winks or special, less conspicuous menus. According to Expresso, this practice is illegal because it is specifically aimed at charging tourists higher amounts without scaring away local customers.
The Portuguese Hotel and Restaurant Association AHRESP has stated that it is not aware of this practice and that prices should be displayed equally and transparently for all guests.
