Around three quarters of Germans are toying with the idea of reducing their holiday spending due to the current high level of inflation. Especially for air travel, many want to spend less money. That's the conclusion of a survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
After more than two years of the Corona pandemic, the travel industry is hoping for a particularly strong summer in 2022. The booking figures are currently very good, but the massive effects of the sharp rise in the cost of living are now becoming apparent. Around three quarters of Germans want to cut back on their holiday plans or their spending. Around 56 percent of those surveyed stated that they would like to reduce the number of trips this year.
Half of the survey participants want to accept compromises in the areas of comfort, activities and length of stay. Short vacations and participation in events want to reduce 60 percent of Germans.
An interesting picture also emerges when it comes to the choice of travel: the respondents want to make fewer cuts when it comes to camping and holiday homes. Stays in holiday resorts or wellness facilities even want to reduce 78 percent. When it comes to hotels, 68 percent think of reducing spending.
When choosing the means of travel, 73 percent consider that due to increased ticket prices, fewer people could fly by plane. 71 percent want to do without ferries and ships. 61 percent of the survey participants want to save money on their own car or rental cars.
According to PwC Germany, giving up summer vacation is not an issue for the vast majority. 60 percent stated that a holiday in Germany was an option for them and 51 percent said they would also travel abroad. “So the tourism industry has legitimate hopes that, despite concerns about inflation, travel as a cultural experience and recreation will continue to be of great importance,” says Ingo Bauer, Head of Transport and Logistics at PWC Germany.
