Germans' travel planning in 2026 under economic pressure

Despite a volatile economic and geopolitical environment, travel readiness in Germany will remain stable in 2026. According to the latest Global Travel Confidence Index from Allianz Partners, the majority of the population still plans to take a summer trip, although a clear trend towards rationalization is emerging.

Instead of foregoing relaxation, consumers are adjusting their booking behavior to the increased cost of living. Around 41 percent of those surveyed are planning a trip abroad, while approximately 26 percent prefer vacation destinations within Germany. It is noteworthy that almost a third of the population indicate they will not be traveling at all this summer, underscoring the increasing financial selectivity in leisure activities.

Average planned travel expenses amount to €1.431 per person. This places Germany in the middle of the pack internationally, but it also demonstrates a growing sensitivity to price increases in the tourism sector. To make the best use of their available budget, many travelers are either shortening their stays or choosing destinations with a better price-performance ratio. Additional market analyses from the tourism industry confirm that classic all-inclusive packages and early booking discounts are once again gaining popularity to ensure reliable cost control. Spontaneous bookings, on the other hand, are declining, as strategic advance planning offers greater financial security.

Besides economic considerations, operational risks and the general security situation significantly influence the choice of destination. Geopolitical tensions and concerns about disruptions to travel plans, such as delays or flight cancellations, lead to a more careful risk assessment. In this context, travel insurance has evolved from an optional add-on to a core component of vacation planning. The need for financial protection against unforeseen events is higher than ever before. Experts also observe that the proximity and accessibility of the destination, as well as personal safety on-site, now often carry more weight than purely climatic or cultural aspects.

Industry experts point out that this development could lead to a lasting transformation of the travel market. The tourism industry is responding to changing consumer behavior with more flexible cancellation policies and transparent pricing models. While the need for relaxation and improved quality of life through travel remains deeply rooted in society, the way it is fulfilled has changed: In 2026, a vacation is no longer an impulse purchase, but rather the result of a detailed assessment of costs, benefits, and individual safety. This presents a particular challenge for tour operators and insurers, who must offer tailored solutions for a risk-averse and price-conscious clientele.
