Between August 28 and 31, 2023, the instrument landing systems (ILS and GBAS) on the various runways and the Kloten rotary radio beacon (VOR KLO) will be tested at Zurich Airport with a measuring aircraft. The measuring flights only take place in the afternoon because only a reduced program is required.
To ensure the accuracy of the navigation systems, they are tested periodically. Approaches to the side, above and below the published flight path are required for the check. For this reason, the measurement flights are sometimes carried out off the usual flight routes. For a measurement, the respective runway is flown to several times. The signals received by the aircraft from the corresponding navigation systems are recorded and evaluated.
A Beechcraft King Air 350 twin-engine propeller aircraft is used for the measurement flights. The machine is equipped with the latest navigation aids and a high-precision flight inspection device. Skyguide air traffic control is responsible for planning and operating the flights.
