It hisses and steams in the Landwasser valley, in the Surselva and in the Engadin: With the power of fire and water, the steam locomotive makes its rounds through the vast Graubünden. The line from Landquart to Klosters opened in 1889. Today, a 385-kilometer route network runs through the heart of the Swiss high mountains.

This autumn, the Rhaetian Railway is once again inspiring with its steam journeys in charming old trains. There are three dates to choose from: on September 10th and October 15th and 16th, 2022. Train lovers can immerse themselves in the wondrous world of the steam age. You experience a piece of railway history up close, with smoke and mirrors in the Graubünden mountains. Traveling in first class promises to be a special highlight. This takes place in the Belle-époque-Coupé including a welcome drink, coffee and pastries.

Steam ride Surselva

The Surselva panoramic steam ride in the historical carriages of the Rhaetian Railway starts in Landquart. The day trip leads through Graubünden to Sumvitg-Cumpadials and back. The first stop is in Chur. The steam engine then makes its way to the monumental Rhine Gorge. It crosses the Rhine Valley between the confluence of the Vorder- and Hinterrhein near Reichenau and Ilanz. A unique experience for young and old that guests experience up close. After looking at the fascinating natural phenomenon, the steepest part of the route awaits. The locomotive gets new power with fresh water. During the lunch stop in Sumvitg-Cumpadials, passengers explore the region. On the return journey, the journey makes a final stop in the Alpine town of Chur. The departure takes place at 8.25 a.m. in Landquart, it ends there at 17.44 p.m. Date: Saturday, September 10, 2022.

Steam ride Albula

Seeing the Engadin and Albula Valley in autumn colors is already unique. The beautiful nature can be enjoyed twice as much on a steamer trip. The route is harmoniously embedded in the landscape. The wide plains of the Engadin appear as they did 125 years ago. The stage between Samedan and Surava is a showpiece from the time of the railway pioneers. It is therefore also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway. Pulled by the steam locomotive, passengers cross the Engadin mountains. There is time to linger during longer stays in the railway villages of Filisur and Bergün. It starts at 8.20 a.m. in Samedan, where the journey ends at 16.20 p.m. Date: Saturday 15 October 2022.

Engadine steam ride

It's steaming and hissing at the train station in Samedan when the Engadin steam train starts. The more than 100-year-old steam locomotive slowly starts to move on October 16, 2022. It takes three hours to Scuol-Tarasp, with intermediate stops in Bever, Zernez and Ardez. After a break in Scuol-Tarasp, the return journey promises rail enthusiasts a double experience of the natural autumn scenery. The trips are return, one way or in the opposite direction. A bar and bistro car are available in the middle of the train. The Engadin steam train departs from Samedan at 9.59 a.m., the train reaches Scuol-Tarasp at 12.03 p.m. The departure back to Samedan starts at 13.45 p.m., the arrival in Samedan is at 16.54 p.m. Date: Sunday 16 October 2022.
