Russia: Azimuth gets new SSJ-100 with second-hand engines

In the Russian Federation, engines for the Sukhoi Superjet SSJ-100 have become scarce. This is also related to the fact that the sanctions make access to western parts much more difficult. A brand-new Superjet with used engines is now being delivered.

The PowerJet SaM146 consists predominantly of Western components. Among others, the French company Safran Aircraft Engines is involved in the joint venture. The latter had to withdraw and cease support due to the Western sanctions imposed on Russia. The result: it is slowly running out of engines for the SSJ-100.

Initially, this was not seen as a major problem in Russia, because they were convinced that they could then produce the required drives themselves without the support of their western partner. However, NPO Saturn has not yet reached the point where the engines required for the SSJ-100 can be manufactured completely in Russian without any components from abroad.

In the meantime, the drives are in short supply and this leads to the absurd fact that Azimuth Airlines has to wait a long time for the delivery of their SSJ-100 number 17. Actually, you should get this aircraft in spring 2022, but some parts were missing and the final assembly was delayed. Now the United Aircraft Corporation cannot find new engines and instead assembles used ones.

So Azimuth Airlines will get a brand new SSJ-100 in the next few weeks, which is equipped with second-hand engines from the factory. The airline concerned did not want to comment, but it can be assumed that they are not particularly happy with it. Anyone who buys a new car does not want one with a used engine. UAC said, "The engines on the Azimuth aircraft are in excellent condition and the use of used engines will not affect the airline's operations or flight safety. They are reliable."
