With effect from 1 December 2023, Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will operate a base at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport. Initially, two machines are to be stationed.
The decision comes as a surprise in Denmark, because the low-cost company has repeatedly criticized the price level at the airport in the past. With the two aircraft, which are to be operated from Copenhagen from December 1, 2023, four new routes are to be added.
In connection with the announcement of the Weeze-Copenhagen route, Ryanair made a faux pas and suggested that they would fly from Düsseldorf again. Most recently, the Laudamotion brand was active in Düsseldorf in 2020. Contrary to original promises to the staff, they then withdrew and justified this with high costs.
In fact, the carrier said: “Ryanair announces new Dusseldorf-Copenhagen route for Winter '23 – Ryanair, Europe's No. 1 airline, today (22 August) announced a new Dusseldorf-Copenhagen route, to be launched in October will be served three times a week as part of the '23 winter timetable. Düsseldorf citizens/visitors can now book a well-deserved winter break with this exciting new route to Copenhagen and enjoy the lowest fares and widest choice of destinations for Winter '23 at www.ryanair.com.”
Remarkably, a company spokesman subsequently denied that flights would be offered from Dusseldorf. Rather, the media release should be understood in such a way that an additional route from "Düsseldorf/Weeze" will be offered. In the past, the carrier has always mentioned Weeze in communications related to Niederrhein Airport. The provincial airport is called “Düsseldorf Weeze” in the reservation system, but it is well known from the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. Due to a court ruling, the carrier must point out this fact during the booking process.
In Copenhagen, Ryanair hopes that the general price level will fall. The airport has been in the portfolio for many years. A base was also maintained here a long time ago, but was abandoned for a variety of reasons.
