Among others, the airlines Ryanair, Easyjet, Wizzair, Loganair and Jet2 demand in a joint letter to the EU Commission that not only short-haul flights should be covered by the obligation to use sustainable fuels, but also long haul.

One sees in the current approach of the EU Commission not only a distortion of competition, but also the danger that decarbonization will be taken to the point of absurdity. The undersigned airlines point out that the carbon dioxide emissions on the Long Haul should be significantly greater. This segment should therefore also be covered by the so-called SAF quotas.

"There is no logic to exclude long-haul flights from the SAF usage obligations, as this is the only way to reduce carbon emissions," Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary is quoted as saying in a broadcast. It remains to be seen whether the thrust of the low-cost airlines in Brussels will be successful.
