With free entrance tickets and tickets for the City Airport Train, Austrian Airlines is trying to persuade passengers to choose so-called SAF flights. These will be offered on the Vienna-Venice route in September and October 2022.

The aviation industry has high hopes for so-called sustainable aviation fuels. These are not made from petroleum, but from alternative sources. However, it is mostly concealed that the combustion in the engines still produces carbon dioxide and therefore emission-free flights with today's technology are simply not possible for physical and chemical reasons.

The idea behind SAF is not that no more carbon dioxide is produced during combustion, but rather that the materials from which the alternative fuel is obtained have bound more carbon dioxide during their production process than is produced during combustion. Another approach is that by using supposed "waste products" no oil has to be touched. Since March of this year, Austrian Airlines has been filling up with the first 1.500 tons of SAF made regionally from Austrian used cooking oil. The aim is to increase this proportion in the coming years.

"This autumn, environmentally conscious and art-loving passengers can enjoy the Biennale Arte 2022 comfortably and sustainably!" Every passenger from Vienna to Venice who decides to purchase 100% SAF when booking will receive a free return ticket from Vienna city center to the airport Vienna with the City Airport Train (CAT) and free entry to the Biennale Arte 2022. “Sustainable aviation fuel is one of the most important levers for decarbonizing aviation, but it is not yet available in large quantities. For a large-scale deployment, we need the commitment of our guests and the support of our partners along the travel chain," says Chief Commercial Officer Michael Trestl.

Austrian Airlines wants to provide all passengers who choose SAF flights between Vienna and Venice in September and October 2022 with voucher codes for traveling with the City Airport Train as well as tickets for Biennale Arte 2022. These should be sent by email about ten days after booking.

“Purchase of 100% SAF” ? Suggests that 100% SAF is filled up on the flight, which is certainly not true...how high is the actual SAF percentage?
