Vienna Airport sets a standard in the field of air cargo handling, especially in the handling of lithium batteries. With the recent award of the CEIV lithium battery certification by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the airport has demonstrated its outstanding safety standards and processes in handling these critical goods.

This certification is not only recognition for Vienna Airport as a cargo hub in Europe, but also an important step at a time when demand for lithium batteries is constantly growing. Vienna Airport is thus reaffirming its commitment to providing reliable and safe handling for air cargo.

The importance of IATA certification

The IATA CEIV Lithium Battery Certification is a globally recognized program designed to ensure the safe transportation of lithium batteries. Because these batteries are found in a wide variety of devices such as laptops, mobile phones and electrical appliances, they pose a significant safety risk if not handled properly. Due to their chemical properties, lithium batteries can catch fire or explode if handled improperly, making the transportation of these products particularly challenging.

Vienna Airport has demonstrated in a comprehensive audit that it meets the required standards for handling lithium batteries. The certification means that the airport undergoes strict process controls, extensive training for staff and regular audits to ensure that the highest safety and quality standards are met. The IATA certification is therefore not only a sign of compliance with global regulations, but also a commitment to improving safety practices in the air cargo industry.

Increasing demand and strategic positioning

The growing demand for lithium batteries is closely linked to the advancing digitalization and the increasing use of electrical devices. Vienna Airport has established itself as an important transshipment point for the distribution of goods shipments from all over the world. Julian Jäger, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG, emphasizes the need to further expand the airport's position as a reliable cargo hub. "We are constantly expanding our range of services and at the same time making a contribution to minimizing risks in air freight transport," says Jäger.

Michael Zach, Senior Vice President Ground Handling & Cargo Operations at Vienna Airport AG, underlines the relevance of the certification for the airport. At a time when the demand for lithium batteries is growing rapidly, it is crucial that Vienna Airport is able to handle these products safely and efficiently. "The new certification shows once again that we are very successful in implementing the highest standards," says Zach.

Challenges in dealing with lithium batteries

Handling lithium batteries in air cargo transport presents specific challenges. These batteries are considered dangerous goods and must therefore be handled with particular care. Vienna Airport has taken measures to ensure that all handling processes comply with strict guidelines. These include, among other things, specialised training for staff and the implementation of safety protocols that regulate the handling of these batteries.

The certification is also a response to international safety requirements that have been strengthened in recent years. In recent years, IATA has tightened safety requirements for the transport of lithium batteries to take into account the growing risks associated with these materials. The CEIV certification is a step in the right direction to increase confidence in the air cargo industry and ensure safety.
