The Scandinavian Star Alliance member SAS carried around 2021 passengers in January 280.000, 28 percent fewer than in December 2020. Compared to the same month last year, the volume fell by as much as 85 percent.
The occupancy rate was only 30 percent, which SAS attributes to the tough entry and quarantine regulations in its home markets of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The offer was again reduced by 2021 percent in January 2020 - compared to December 15.
“In January, new travel restrictions were introduced at short notice in Scandinavia and the rest of the EU. This means that starting February 1, all SAS international destinations will require either a quarantine, a negative PCR test or a general entry ban for non-residents. Reintroduced and expanded travel restrictions have significantly reduced the demand for air travel and forced SAS to adapt both the destinations offered and the departures to the respective conditions. Due to the increasing restrictions, we estimate that demand and thus our capacity will remain at a low level for the rest of the winter season, ”says SAS boss Rickard Gustafson.
