Winter weather such as snow and black ice regularly causes flight cancellations and delays in Germany, especially around the holidays.
Despite the weather-related problems, airline passengers have rights that are intended to protect them from financial loss. As Nina Staub from AirHelp explains, passengers can claim alternative transport or a full refund of the ticket price in the event of weather-related cancellations. However, rebookings to other flights or means of transport such as trains should always be done in consultation with the airline.
In addition, airlines must provide food, communication facilities and, if necessary, accommodation at the airport for delays of more than two hours. If the delay is more than five hours, the ticket price will be refunded in full. However, in exceptional circumstances such as heavy snowfall or black ice, compensation payments in the form of lump sums (up to 600 euros) cannot be demanded, as these are beyond the control of the airlines.
Affected passengers should keep all receipts and documents in order to receive reimbursement for costs incurred. Experts recommend claiming your rights directly from the airline or, if necessary, using specialized service providers.
