The airport code SXF (Berlin-Schönefeld) has been history since October 25, 2020, because the flight booking systems were switched to BER overnight. The terminal buildings are already labeled “BER Terminal 5” and will therefore continue to be operated.

A total of 17 airlines, including Wizzair and Ryanair, will fly from the former Schönefeld terminal. Easyjet, on the other hand, is moving to Terminal 1 and will make the official first landing on October 31, 2020. The first departure will be on November 1, 2020. All Tegel airlines will then gradually move to BER within a week.

These three letters also stand for the German capital, for the region and for the whole of Eastern Germany. From now on, the “Three-Letter-Code” BER will fly to the world as an ambassador. 30 years after reunification, BER also stands for the end of air traffic that has been split up over several locations and for a transformed metropolitan region, ”says airport manager Engelbert Lütke Daldrup. “SXF becomes BER. The modernized SXF terminals are given a new perspective for the future. As Terminal 5 of BER, the completely renovated Schönefeld Airport will ensure the necessary additional capacities for the next few years in order to handle flight operations at BER reliably overall. This means that Schönefeld will remain a central part of the airport location. We look forward to the continuation of the good cooperation with the community of Schönefeld with the aim of further developing the airport environment. "

With the opening of BER, passengers will either check in and board in the T5 in the north or in the T1 / T2 in the midfield, depending on the airline. A total of 17 airlines will be heading for the T5 to go into operation, including Ryanair and Wizz Air. The terminal areas have had the new designations K, L, M, Q since the end of March. This avoids duplicate designations in BER operations. In the course of this, the guidance system was also adapted to the color scheme of BER. In addition, the terminal areas were completely renovated and new security control technology was installed. Terminal 5 offers enough capacity for 8-10 million passengers a year.

With today's commissioning of the "Flughafen BER - Terminal 1-2" train station, BER is now connected to the rail network. The good connection to the public transport network enables an uncomplicated, fast and environmentally friendly arrival and departure. The train station is located directly under Terminal 1 on level U2. The special feature of BER is that passengers can arrive and depart directly by train or S-Bahn under the terminal. This unique construction guarantees particularly short distances. The six-track station with three platforms is designed for 125.000 travelers per day and ensures smooth arrival and departure for passengers and employees. It is expected that a total of two out of three travelers will come to the new airport by public transport.
