Schönefeld: BER Terminal 5 before the final end

Terminal 5 at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport could be taken off the grid forever. The supervisory board intends to make a decision on November 18, 2022. In the course of the corona pandemic - initially temporarily – shut down and for example used as a vaccination center.

The buildings, some of which date back to GDR times, are said to not only cause high operating costs for the airport company, but also require investments worth millions to bring them back into operation. In view of the continued low number of passengers and the fact that several carriers have reduced their offer from BER, this should not pay off.

It was originally planned that the former Schönefeld terminal should continue to be operated until Terminals 3 and 4 were built. Then it should be closed. The corona pandemic threw up the plan massively. It is currently not foreseeable that the capacities of Terminal 5 will be required. There is no publicly known plan for a possible subsequent use.
