The Dübendorf military airport (Switzerland) became known as a parking lot for numerous machines from Swiss and other airlines in the wake of the corona pandemic. It was planned that this space should be used as a business airport in the future in order to also relieve Kloten. Nothing will come of it now, because the Swiss federal government is withdrawing.
The Federal Department of Transport announced that the federal government is discontinuing plans to convert the Dübendorf military airfield into a civil airfield with a federal base. It is also pointed out that complaints from residents and communities can be expected. The operator, Flugplatz Dübendorf AG, also wants to obtain a full license and not just an operating license. The Federal Council decided to withdraw from the project, particularly due to possible lawsuits from local residents.
It is still unclear whether the project can be implemented without the participation of the Swiss Confederation, for example in cooperation with the canton. Flugplatz Dübendorf AG is angry, however, because it has heard of the Federal Council's withdrawal from the media and is now considering demanding compensation. To this end, reference is made to a corresponding agreement that would provide for such an obligation.
