A dangerous incident involving a lithium-ion battery occurred last Saturday on board a Boeing 737 Max 8 operated by the South Korean airline Tway Air. During flight TW8579 from Sanya to Cheongju, a passenger's power bank ignited, causing immediate smoke to fill the cabin.
Although the cabin crew managed to disable the device using fire extinguishers and secure it in a special fireproof container, the consequences for the passengers were significant. After landing, three flight attendants required medical treatment for smoke inhalation; in addition, five passengers complained of respiratory irritation.
The South Korean aviation safety agency has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the overheating. This incident occurred almost exactly one year after a disaster at Jeju Airport in January 2025, in which an Air Busan Airbus A321 was completely destroyed by fire. At that time, a faulty power bank also ignited a fire that spread so rapidly before takeoff that the aircraft had to be written off as a total loss. As a result of this event, Korean authorities significantly tightened safety regulations: Since then, portable power banks must be kept in transparent plastic bags directly at the passenger's seat throughout the entire flight to allow for the early detection of any smoke.
Internationally, airlines are reacting to the fire hazard posed by lithium batteries with increasingly restrictive measures. While the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) already prescribes strict limits on battery capacity in hand luggage, some airlines, such as Lufthansa subsidiary Discover Airlines, are going even further and completely prohibiting the charging of devices using power banks during flights. Experts point out that mechanical damage or manufacturing defects in batteries can lead to a so-called thermal runaway, in which temperatures exceeding 600 degrees Celsius are reached. Such fires are extremely difficult to extinguish with conventional methods and represent one of the greatest technical hazards in modern air travel.
The aviation industry is currently investing heavily in staff training and the procurement of special "lithium fire bags." These heat-resistant bags are designed to enclose burning laptops or smartphones and prevent the spread of flames and toxic gases. As the number of electronic devices per passenger steadily increases, safety consultants are calling for even stricter enforcement of transport regulations. The recent incident on Tway Air underscores the necessity of these measures, as, despite the crew's swift response, injuries and a potential hazard to the aircraft could not be entirely averted.
