Long-distance bus operator Flixbus has significantly expanded its presence at Düsseldorf Airport at the start of the new travel season. As the operating company of Germany's third-largest airport announced, the service has been increased from three routes with six daily departures to seven routes.
This provides travelers with up to 19 departures per day. This increase in capacity primarily serves to improve the airport's connection to the cross-border long-distance bus network and offers domestic and international passengers a cost-effective alternative to traveling by train or private car.
The expanded route network includes, in particular, new direct connections to the Benelux countries. New destinations include key transport hubs in the Netherlands and Belgium, such as major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Antwerp. Frequency has also been increased within Germany to optimize feeder services from the Ruhr region and the Rhineland. The long-distance bus station at Düsseldorf Airport, located directly adjacent to the terminal, serves as a central interchange point between air and road transport.
Industry experts see this expansion as a response to the increasing demand for intermodal travel. By increasing the frequency of services, Flixbus is improving airport accessibility for passengers from a wider catchment area. While Düsseldorf Airport has traditionally been strongly connected by rail, the expanded bus service fills gaps during nighttime hours and offers direct connections from cities that lack direct ICE (Intercity Express) train service. The logistical handling of the increased departure frequency has been ensured through adjustments to the airport's bus platform.
The cooperation between the airport operator and the mobility provider underscores the importance of Düsseldorf as an international transport hub in North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition to increasing the number of departures, the passenger information system has also been improved to ensure seamless navigation between the arrival halls and the bus platforms. For Flixbus, the expansion in Düsseldorf represents a further step in its strategy to systematically integrate major European air traffic hubs into its route network, thereby attracting new customer groups in the leisure and business travel segments.
