On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, there were extremely long queues in front of the security checkpoint at Zurich-Kloten Airport. According to local reports, these should have reached far into the check-in zones.

The consequences of this: The waiting time for the passengers was exceptionally long and one or the other passenger is said to have missed his flight. At Zurich Airport, it is not the airport itself that is responsible for carrying out the security checks, but the cantonal police. Management has no control over this. A spokeswoman for the executive explained, among other things: "The situation on the labor market is tense, so that rapid recruitment of new employees is challenging".

In other words: there is an acute shortage of personnel in the area of security control. Travelers must be prepared for longer waiting times at the security check. The canton police also know this, because the media officer recommends arriving at Zurich Airport at least two to three hours before departure. You should also not exceed the carry-on baggage allowance allowed by the airline.

In cooperation with the airport, solutions are now to be found to make the situation more bearable for travelers. This also with regard to the traditionally busy summer holidays, which start in just a few weeks. Some courses for new employees have already started, but it will still be some time before they can be used.
