Star Alliance members Singapore Airlines and Thai Airways want to work more closely together in the future. To this end, a declaration of intent has been signed that should lead to the formation of a strategic partnership. The core are additional codeshare connections.
If the memorandum of understanding is actually implemented, close cooperation between Singapore and Bangkok is initially planned. Thai Airways would subsequently code Singapore Airlines flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver.
Singapore Airlines said the agreement will include flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). These codeshare flights still have to be approved by the authorities. The two airlines will continue to look for codeshare opportunities on other flights between Singapore and Thailand, as well as to destinations in Europe, India and the South West Pacific.
“SIA and Thai have had a close relationship for many years, which we want to expand further with this comprehensive agreement. Both airlines have a loyal customer base and are active both in Southeast Asia and around the world,” said Goh Choon Phong, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Airlines.
Acting CEO of Thai Airways, Suvadhana Sibunruang, noted that the partnership “will also enable the expansion of the Thai network to more routes in the United States, Canada, South Africa, Europe, India and the Southwest Pacific. The cooperation strengthens the networks of the two airlines as members of the Star Alliance".
