In Sicily, numerous subsidized domestic routes have been awarded to maintain connectivity. The contracts were awarded by the Italian civil aviation authority ENAC to three airlines: Albastar, Alitalia and Tayaranjet.

As reported Albastar will operate a total of three routes from Trapani and receive subsidies for them. These are the destinations Brindisi, Naples and Parma. Ancona, Perugia and Trieste were awarded to the competitor Tayaranjet. These are also served from Trapani. Alitalia was awarded the contract for Milan-Linate and Rome-Fiumicino from Comiso.

The routes supported by public funds are to be started from November 1, 2020. It should also be noted that, due to the subsidy conditions, significantly reduced ticket prices must be offered for residents of Sicily. The difference to the standard tariff is covered by the subsidies. There are also comparable examples in Greece and Spain.
