Czech airline Smartwings plans to take a significant step in its fleet modernization. On November 22, 2024, the first Airbus A220 will be deployed, flying on the Prague-Paris-Charles de Gaulle route. This decision marks a turning point in the company's strategy and is part of a comprehensive adaptation of the fleet, which has evolved in recent years in terms of both technology and sustainability.
Smartwings has so far limited itself to a Boeing fleet consisting mainly of Boeing 737-800 and 737 Max 8. These aircraft are known for their efficiency and reliability, but the A220 represents a new dimension in the fleet strategy. Originally developed as the Bombardier CSeries, the Airbus A220 is known for its fuel efficiency, comfort and flexibility on short and medium-haul flights. With a capacity of up to 160 passengers in a typical two-class configuration, it is ideal for Smartwings' planned routes.
According to a press release from Smartwings, the A220 will play an important role in the expansion and diversification of the route network. "We are pleased to add the first A220s to our fleet as they will help us offer our customers a modern and comfortable travel experience," Smartwings CEO explained in an interview.
Use of the A220: More than just a new aircraft type
The decision to introduce the Airbus A220 is also in the context of the planned reorientation of the parent company and its subsidiary, CSA Czech Airlines. Originally, the four A220s ordered were intended for CSA. However, following a restructuring, it was decided to cease CSA operations and consolidate the entire fleet under the Smartwings brand. The two remaining A220s are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2025, underlining Smartwings' ambitions to become a leading airline in the region.
Currently, CSA still operates two Airbus A320s, but their future is uncertain. Smartwings' strategic decision to add the A220 to its fleet could also have an impact on the availability and operating costs of the existing Airbus models. Industry analysts speculate that the A220, thanks to its modern technology, will be able to both reduce operating costs and offer higher capacity.
The airline market in transition
Airlines worldwide are facing the challenge of competing in an ever-changing market. The introduction of efficient aircraft such as the A220 is a response to rising operating costs and the growing demand for more environmentally friendly travel options. The A220 has already proven itself in many European airlines, including Air Baltic and Swiss International Air Lines, which have successfully integrated it into their fleets. In addition, the decision to switch to Airbus is a strategic response to the challenges associated with using Boeing models exclusively.
