Against the background of the elimination of many travel restrictions caused by the pandemic, the airlines at Munich Airport will again be offering significantly more connections in the upcoming summer flight schedule than in the two previous years.
"We can see that demand is picking up speed at the moment and are expecting a significant increase in passenger numbers for the summer," explained Jost Lammers, CEO of Flughafen München GmbH. Lufthansa is stationing four additional Airbus A350 long-haul aircraft during the summer period and thus operates a total of 26 long-haul aircraft at its Munich hub. The crane line has now included the long-haul destinations of San Diego, Rio de Janeiro and Bangkok in its range of flights from Munich. Lufthansa is also resuming two other North American destinations, Toronto and Washington, and is also flying to Mumbai in India again. The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Discover serves three popular long-haul destinations from Munich: Las Vegas, Punta Cana and Cancun.
United Airlines is currently planning six daily flights to the United States, including Denver for the first time. This means that United will be offering one more destination from Munich next summer than in the pre-crisis year of 2019. The American airlines American Airlines and Delta are once again flying daily to Charlotte and Atlanta. Delta has also announced a service to Detroit starting in May.
All airlines from the Arabian Gulf operating in Munich will also be back online in the summer timetable period. Emirates flies to Dubai, Qatar Airways to Doha, Etihad Airways to Abu Dhabi, Kuwait Airways to Kuwait City, Oman Air to Muscat and Saudi Arabian Airlines to Jeddah and Riyadh. Thai Airways International, which flies from Munich to the Thai capital Bangkok, is making its comeback.
A clear revival is to be expected in holiday travel to European and North African destinations. With up to five aircraft based in Munich, Eurowings Discover will be flying to 25 popular tourist hotspots – from Antalya to the Canary Islands and Zakynthos. Lufthansa connects Munich with a total of 80 holiday destinations in the summer season. The airline Condor, which serves a total of 29 destinations from Munich, is also offering attractive connections for holidaymakers next summer. There are 14 weekly Condor flights to Mallorca alone. In northern Europe, three further travel destinations will be connected to Bavaria's hub: Billund and Bergen (Lufthansa) and Tampere (Air Baltic).
In view of the renewed traffic, all check-in areas in the satellite building belonging to Terminal 2 are now being used again. After a longer break due to the pandemic, this passenger building was reopened in December 2021 for non-Schengen traffic - in particular for connections to the USA. Since the beginning of March, flights operated by Lufthansa and Star Alliance within the countries of the Schengen Community have been handled in the satellite again.
