The Spanish airport operator Aena intends to convert security checks to modern 3D X-ray scanners by next year. As a result, liquids and electronic devices such as laptops no longer have to be checked separately in the future.

Initially, the new technology will be introduced at the Madrid and Barcelona locations. The other airports operated by Aena in Spain will follow in the course of 2024. Currently, liquid products, aerosols and other gels can only be carried in the cabin in containers of maximum 100ml (or 100g for creams, pastes, etc.) in resealable plastic bags measuring 20cm by 20cm. This regulation was introduced in November 2006. A few months earlier, British authorities had foiled a terrorist attack intended to blow up planes with bombs hidden in drinks bottles.
