The planned takeover of Air Europa by the International Airlines Group fell through, but the Spanish government wants to make a new attempt. This time one is considering whether the state could officially step in.

The Spanish government has repeatedly granted Air Europa emergency loans, including through the Sepi Fund. These could be converted into a stake of up to 40 percent. This is intended to make entry palatable for the International Airlines Group, because the state would then take the risk.

Officially, neither IAG nor Air Europa and their owner Globalia want to comment on the corresponding media reports. However, the government is more talkative, as a spokesman confirmed that this possibility is currently being evaluated and discussed with stakeholders.

The government plan states that Globalia will remain on board with a small stake, the state will hold around 40 percent and the rest will go to the International Airlines Group. The coming weeks and months will show whether this can be implemented. Previously is a full Takeover by IAG collapsed.
