SpiceJet, one of India's leading low-cost airlines, is in deep financial trouble. In a statement, SpiceJet attempted to defuse the situation, saying that the flights were cancelled due to "operational reasons". The problems in Dubai are just the tip of the iceberg for SpiceJet. The airline has repeatedly made headlines over the past few years with financial difficulties. Among the most recent allegations was that the airline failed to pay contributions to its employees' welfare fund for over two and a half years.
In addition, seven companies, mainly aircraft frame and engine lessors, have filed insolvency petitions against SpiceJet in the National Company Law Tribunal. Another seven companies have active claims pending in the Delhi High Court, with some companies filing more than one case.
Raising capital and financial stabilization
In an attempt to stabilise its financial situation, SpiceJet has embarked on a major capital raising campaign this year. So far, the airline has raised around 10,6 billion rupees ($126,5 million). In late July, the airline's board approved raising an additional 30 billion rupees ($358 million). These funds will be used not only to stabilise operations and improve the balance sheet, but also to settle litigation and long-standing arrears.
SpiceJet's financial woes are emblematic of the challenges facing many low-cost airlines around the world. Rising operating costs, fierce competition and the need to invest in modern and efficient aircraft are putting pressure on the industry.
