The consumer protection committee met yesterday and processed numerous opposition motions. Including the demands made by the SPÖ for insolvency protection for airlines and sufficient compensation for canceled trips.
SPÖ MPs Markus Vogl and Christian Drobits approached the consumer protection minister with a request to campaign at European level to ensure that airlines - similar to tour operators - are required to take out insolvency insurance. This would also give those people better legal protection who book their flight themselves via online platforms or directly with the airline. In contrast to package travelers, you currently only receive a small part of the ticket price or even nothing at all in the event of bankruptcy. Here it must come to an equality of the consumers.
It is the airlines that make negative headlines in these times, not least because of the failure to meet the statutory ticket refund deadline. And the procedure usually has no consequences, even if the customer is ultimately fobbed off with voucher solutions. Legal protection of the claim would considerably improve the legal position of the consumer. But the committee disagrees: NEOS representative Fiona Fiedler rejected the SPÖ's proposal because, in her opinion, it would make tickets more expensive. MP Ernst Gödl (ÖVP) spoke of a bad time, especially since the flight industry is currently extremely affected by the Corona crisis. He therefore applied for an adjournment.
