On Thursday evening, Milan-Malpensa airport had to be closed due to heavy rain between 19:00 p.m. and 21:15 p.m. The outside area of Terminal 1 and the runways are literally "flooded".
The fire brigade announced that several people had to be freed from cars that were trapped in the mass of water. There were also problems on the apron, because at least 20 airport workers had to be evacuated with rafting boats. The airport fire brigade even had to ask for help from specialists who actually specialize in rescuing people from rivers.
A high level of property damage occurred at Malpensa Airport. The amount cannot currently be quantified. Flight operations could be resumed at around 21:15 p.m. Previously, at least three planes had to be diverted to Bergamo and Linate. It is still unclear whether planes were also damaged.
