Strategic partnership at Klagenfurt Airport: Slovenian company Solinair establishes maintenance operations there

Klagenfurt Airport is significantly expanding its operational scope and strengthening its position in the Alps-Adriatic region by attracting a specialized aircraft maintenance service provider. The Slovenian company Solinair has entered into a long-term cooperation agreement with the Carinthian airport and will provide comprehensive technical services directly at the site. Dedicated office space and specialized parking areas on the apron have already been leased for this purpose.

The new branch will focus on the maintenance of Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets, with capacity designed to service up to eight of these aircraft simultaneously. The first two aircraft for maintenance work have already arrived at the airport. This strategic decision by the airport management, under Managing Director Maximilian Wildt, aims to diversify revenue streams and increase the airport's attractiveness to international airline partners. In addition to the planned scheduled maintenance, the presence of a certified technical service provider on-site also offers logistical advantages for ongoing flight operations, as short-term technical defects can be resolved immediately. Furthermore, the establishment of this branch is considered an important impetus for the overall development of the airport, which is to be further advanced in the coming years.

Structural realignment and land development in Carinthia

The cooperation with Solinair marks a turning point in the strategic direction of Klagenfurt Airport. For a long time, the airport focused primarily on passenger traffic and seasonal charter flights. In light of the volatile developments in global air traffic, management is now increasingly focusing on technical services and real estate development. By leasing apron areas to an external maintenance company, previously underutilized infrastructure is being put to productive economic use.

Maximilian Wildt, Managing Director of Klagenfurt Airport, sees significant strategic added value in this development. An on-site maintenance facility will serve as a technical safety net for all airlines using the airport. Should an aircraft experience a technical malfunction, a team of technicians will no longer need to be flown in from Vienna, Graz, or Ljubljana. This will save airlines time and considerable costs in ground handling. Furthermore, the project will serve as a model for the future commercial development of the airport's land, which is being prepared for various industrial and logistics projects as part of the airport's land development program.

Technical specialization in the Bombardier CRJ series

The choice of Solinair as a partner is based on sound expertise. The Slovenian company has many years of experience in the maintenance of regional aircraft. The focus on the Bombardier CRJ900 is no coincidence. This aircraft type is widely used by many European regional airlines, including partners of the Lufthansa Group and smaller state-owned carriers in the Balkans. The CRJ900 is known for its efficiency on short-haul routes, but due to the high frequency of takeoffs and landings, it requires regular and precise maintenance intervals.

In Klagenfurt, the logistical infrastructure has been put in place to service up to eight of these aircraft simultaneously. This requires not only space on the apron, but also a corresponding connection to spare parts logistics and the provision of office and break rooms for the technical staff. The fact that the first two aircraft arrived on the very day of the announcement underscores the operational readiness and the existing market demand. Solinair is thus using Klagenfurt as a strategic outpost to serve customers throughout Central Europe more quickly and flexibly.

Strengthening the aviation hub in the Alpe-Adria region

The establishment of this facility must also be seen in the context of regional competition. Klagenfurt Airport faces constant competition from Ljubljana, Graz, and Trieste. By expanding its portfolio to include highly specialized maintenance services, Klagenfurt is creating a unique selling point in the immediate region. For airlines looking to optimize their fleet planning, this makes the Carinthian airport an attractive location for so-called "night-stop maintenance" or planned layovers during the quieter winter months.

The long-term partnership with Solinair also signals stability. In the aviation industry, investments in maintenance facilities are costly and designed to last for several years or even decades. This provides Klagenfurt Airport with a reliable source of revenue beyond fluctuating passenger fees. Diversifying the business model protects the airport against crises in the tourism sector and strengthens its industrial base. The synergies between flight operations and technical services could attract further companies from the aviation supply industry in the future.

Economic stimulus for the Carinthia region

Beyond the immediate airport perimeter, Solinair's establishment also has an impact on the regional labor market. Maintenance companies require highly qualified aircraft technicians, engineers, and logistics specialists. Even if Solinair employs some of its core staff from Slovenia, the Klagenfurt location will create new opportunities for cooperation with local educational institutions and service providers. Furthermore, the demand for hotel accommodations for technician teams or crew members transporting aircraft for maintenance will generate additional revenue for the regional hotel industry.

The development of the airport area is a key project of Carinthian state policy. The establishment of an internationally active partner like Solinair reinforces the location's credibility as a business location. It demonstrates that the existing infrastructure – including the long runway, which is easily suitable for larger jets – represents an attractive asset for technical service providers. Klagenfurt Airport is thus evolving from a mere transport hub into a multifunctional aviation campus.

Future prospects and operational milestones

The coming months will show how quickly Solinair's capacity in Klagenfurt can be ramped up. The successful integration of the first eight parking positions for the CRJ900 fleet is just the first step. Should demand for maintenance services continue to rise, an expansion to other aircraft types or an increase in the leased area would be conceivable. The airport management has already indicated its openness to further partnerships that complement the existing services.
