At the airport in the Australian city of Brisbane, incidents with an invasive wasp species have been reported in recent years: the insects tried to nestle in the aircraft's pitot tubes.

These probes are used to measure the speed of an aircraft. So they have to work properly. Australian researchers therefore set up replica pitot tubes at several points in the airport and observed the small tubes for a good three years. The result: In almost 100 cases, keyhole wasps caused blockages. The researchers therefore recommend covering the real probes on the aircraft after landing and setting up wasp traps, such as deutschlandfunk.de reported.
