Subsidies: Andorra puts Madrid flights out to tender

Advertising

The tiny state of Andorra wants to improve transport connections to the Spanish capital Madrid and is therefore putting PSO-subsidized flights out to tender. These are to be carried out entirely on Spanish territory, as Andorra Airport is located in Spain.

In the past there were frequent flight connections from Andorra - La Seu d'Urgell to Barcelona and Madrid, but these could not last long. The small airport is also limited in terms of aircraft due to the runway, which is only 1.500 meters long.

Now the government of Andorra wants to establish a connection to the Spanish capital Madrid that is as permanent as possible. A tender has been opened for this purpose. Specifically, this means that potential operators can apply for subsidies for the operation. First and foremost, turboprop operators are likely to come into question here, as Andorra Airport is not suitable for jets such as the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737.

In the recent past there have always been charter flights operated by Swiftair, for example. Among other things, machines of the type ATR72-500 were used. The airport is basically suitable for all machines that can make do with the 1.500-meter runway.
