The Turkish holiday airline Sunexpress plans to significantly expand its fleet in the next few years. The aim is to operate 2035 machines by 166. Significantly more than today, as we currently have 66 aircraft.

Sunexpress is a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa, which mainly specializes in traffic between the DA-CH region and Turkey. In recent years, Sunexpress has also added numerous routes outside of its main purpose. There was once a branch in Germany, but it has since been dissolved.

It was recently announced that Sunexpress has ordered 45 aircraft from the Boeing 737 Max series. But it won't stay that way, because company boss Max Kownatzki explained in an interview with Aviation Week that the fleet will grow to 2035 aircraft by 166. This is following a similar course to Turkish Airlines, as this carrier also wants to expand significantly in the next few years.

Kownatzki currently assumes that the first Boeing 737-Max-10 can be taken over in 2027. It is hoped that there will be no delays, as these would lead to significant additional costs in the form of less income, especially in the busy summer months.

The Sunexpress managing director sees the fact that it is a joint venture between Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa as positive. You can act independently, but at the same time benefit from both shareholders. The current strategy would have been developed and agreed upon together with both shareholders.
