So-called service flat rates were gradually introduced by more and more companies in Austria. The consideration is completely unclear, but these increase the income of the companies. This phenomenon has also been evident in gastronomy for a few weeks.

Even a sausage stand in Vienna has started to add a compulsory tip directly to the customer's bill. The standler certainly caused a stir, but it is not an isolated case. Daily media are reporting on more and more restaurants that, under terms such as a service flat rate or flat rate tip, extort an additional basket of money from their customers, which is usually not mentioned on the menu or on the notice board.

The magazine Falstaff, which specializes in gastronomy, has already carried out a survey. This showed that around 78 percent of the participants spoke out against mandatory tips. Furthermore: “However, tips are given regularly and gladly. However, people want to decide for themselves how much to tip and see tipping as voluntary recognition of good service and high quality. More than three quarters of those surveyed regularly tip ten percent. Over 14 percent recognize the performance of the staff with 15 percent and more. Even if the service was not entirely satisfactory, 65 percent still tip. Only 35 percent refuse to tip if the visit to the restaurant does not meet their expectations".
