In cooperation with various partner companies, SWISS has for the first time established a holistic logistics chain for the import of sustainable fuel (SAF) into Switzerland. This makes the Lufthansa subsidiary the first scheduled airline to use sustainable fuel for its regular flight operations from Switzerland.
The import of aviation fuels with a biogenic content into Switzerland and their refueling at Swiss airports has been possible since July 1, 2021 due to new customs regulations. “We are delighted that shortly after the new regulations came into force, we were able to receive the first train with SAF through self-supply in Switzerland. For years, Swiss and the Lufthansa Group have been committed to the import of sustainable fuels, as these are the key technology in the medium to long term in order to achieve our goals for 2030 with the drive technologies available today in aviation ”, says Swiss boss Dieter Vranckx.
Delivery is sufficient for around 175 flights
The first delivery includes over 460 tons of pure SAF. With this amount of fuel, the carrier can theoretically carry out around 175 flights. “This is a milestone for Swiss aviation in the area of sustainability. We are proud to be the first airline to have laid the foundations for using SAF in regular flight operations in Switzerland. Together with our ultra-modern fleet, we enable responsible travel, ”explains Vranckx.
