Swiss extends capacity expansion on the Zurich–Delhi route

Swiss International Air Lines is responding to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East by extending its capacity expansion on the route between Zurich and the Indian capital Delhi.

Until July 11, 2026, the existing daily service will be supplemented by a second daily flight. An Airbus A330 will be used for this service, reflecting the company's response to the significant shift in passenger flows. As many travelers are currently avoiding major hubs in the Gulf region or are stranded there due to flight cancellations, the airline is experiencing a surge in demand for direct flights between Europe and Asia.

The decision to continue the additional flights is based on a detailed analysis of current bookings. Because airspace over certain parts of the Middle East is restricted due to armed conflict or is being avoided by many airlines, travel times and capacities at competing carriers have changed significantly. Swiss is utilizing freed-up aircraft resources originally intended for other regions to alleviate the bottlenecks in its India service. The departure times of the two daily flights are closely spaced, allowing for greater flexibility in handling passenger numbers at Zurich Airport.

In addition to demand, operational factors also play a crucial role in the extension of the special flights. The allocation of the necessary take-off and landing slots in Delhi, as well as the availability of traffic rights, has been successfully secured for the period until July. Industry experts point out that the additional connection LX2646/2647 not only supports passenger traffic but also increases freight capacity between Switzerland and the Indian subcontinent. This is particularly relevant as maritime trade in the Red Sea is currently affected, and time-critical goods are increasingly being transported by air.

For the coming months, Swiss management is continuously reviewing further adjustments to the flight schedule. The strategy involves deploying fleet capacity where geopolitical shifts lead to a surplus of booking requests. As long as uncertainty persists in the Gulf region, direct connections to Asian metropolises remain a key component of business planning. The booking systems have already been updated to make the additional daily frequency accessible to both private and business customers.
