Kosovo: Eurowings accepts Pristina-Belgrade

The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings is planning to start non-stop flights between Pristina and Belgrade. This is a first in many ways, because Serbia continues to view Kosovo as part of its territory, while the majority of countries see it differently and recognize Kosovo as an independent state. So far, there have been no non-stop flights between the two cities due to political disagreements. The last time such a connection existed was in 1999, but was discontinued due to the political disputes already mentioned. The United States of America has now brokered the resumption. Eurowings confirmed to Airliners.de that plans to do so exist. The company already has a base in Pristina, which is operated by Eurowings Europe. However, an exact date for the start of the route has not yet been set. A corresponding letter of intent has already been signed with the two states. However, the actual start could be delayed for economic reasons due to the corona pandemic. However, the planned route is also a novelty from Eurowings' point of view, as it is the first route to be launched between two countries that are not part of the European Union. Vienna travel warnings: Airlines are monitoring the situation

Belgium, Germany and Switzerland now consider the Austrian capital Vienna to be a risk area. This means that travelers must now go into quarantine. Germany: Eurowings reacts to Lauda withdrawal

The champagne corks must have been popping at Eurowings, as Ryanair is known to be withdrawing from Düsseldorf for the time being. This means the loss of numerous jobs at its subsidiary Lauda. The Lufthansa subsidiary, on the other hand, has now announced that numerous routes will be taken over. Specifically, Eurowings has decided to increase its flight offering from Düsseldorf to Mallorca, Ibiza, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Málaga, Alicante and Faro at short notice. Eurowings will also be increasing its flights to the Greek destinations of Heraklion, Rhodes, Corfu and Kos from October 24th. From this date, Ryanair announced its withdrawal from Düsseldorf Airport and - as it had previously done in Stuttgart - canceled all flights without further ado. In return, travelers with Eurowings can now fly from Düsseldorf to more than 80 direct destinations across Europe, with free and flexible rebooking like never before. Eurowings boss bishop criticizes 5 euro tickets

Ryanair and other low-cost airlines are currently putting a large number of single-digit euro tickets on the market. Eurowings boss Jens Bischof does not agree with this, however. He even believes that ultra-low-cost is "out". The manager criticized the current pricing policy of Ryanair and other low-cost airlines in an interview with FVW. Court: Eurowings has to reimburse passengers directly

In particular, passengers who booked their cancelled flights not directly with the airline but through one of the many booking portals are currently at the mercy of a massive ping-pong game of responsibilities. The NRW Consumer Advice Center has now obtained an injunction against Eurowings, among others, which is intended to put an end to the "games" at the expense of consumers. The result of this is that Eurowings and some other airlines are currently prohibited by law from making refunds via the booking portals. These must be paid directly to the end customer. The background to this is precisely the ping-pong games, because the airline refers to the agent and the agent refers to the airline. There are also allegedly cases in which the airline is said to have refunded the portal, but the portal is alleged to have not passed the money on to the passenger. In recent weeks and months, such reports have been piling up. At Eurowings, this has now been put to a stop, because due to the injunction, payments can temporarily only be made directly to the customer. Unfortunately, the affected passengers cannot expect the refund they are entitled to to be sent any faster, as Eurowings must now first research the contact details. Lufthansa Group is tightening the mask requirement

From September 1, 2020, the Lufthansa Group will only allow passengers who can present a negative COVID-19 test and a medical certificate to fly without a mask. This also explicitly applies to the subsidiary Austrian Airlines. Until now, the crane group granted some groups of people an exemption from the general mask requirement. This includes in particular people who cannot wear one for medical reasons and can prove this with a medical certificate. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group are now issuing a form that must be signed by a doctor. In addition, a negative PCR test that must not be older than 48 hours must be presented. Only if these two mandatory documents are presented will you be allowed to fly on board without a mask. "We have always emphasized that safety is our top priority, especially in times of COVID-19. A mask is the simplest and most effective protection against transmission," says Austrian Airlines COO Jens Ritter. "The majority of our passengers adhere to the rules in an exemplary manner. With the current change, we are taking an additional step towards greater safety on the aircraft." Eurowings: demand collapsed

Due to weak demand, the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings is currently revising its plans for the fall. Company boss Jens Bischof said in a video conference that capacity utilization has fallen by about a quarter in recent days. This is mainly due to the fact that passengers from tour operators are staying away. The fact that Germany has declared the EU country Spain a risk area in particular is having a negative impact on demand at Eurowings. There was an immediate drop of about 30 percent. The company is still monitoring further developments and does not want to make any adjustments to the flight schedule. However, according to Bischof, no further aircraft can be reactivated for the time being. 51 aircraft are currently in use and this could remain the case for the time being, as the manager sees around 50 aircraft as a realistic fleet size for the winter flight schedule. Eurowings is currently planning 2021 aircraft for summer 80. They are also working on other additional products, which Bischof described as "a kind of corona insurance". Eurowings monetizes vacant middle seats

The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings now intends to make money on a large scale from empty middle seats. Following Condor, this carrier is now also introducing the option of keeping the middle seat empty - in a 3-3 seating arrangement. A fee of at least 18 euros must be paid for this. The EASA recommends that all European airlines keep the middle seats empty in order to increase the distance between passengers, provided the capacity of the respective flight allows it. However, most airlines are having a hard time implementing this. They are increasingly recognizing the desire for more distance from the person sitting next to them as a new source of income and are introducing such an extra, which of course is subject to a fee. Eurowings calls the monetization of empty seats "innovative". However, the "extra" can only be booked via the homepage from September 2020. Eurowings announces additional routes

Eurowings is launching a total of 26 routes from Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn and Berlin. These are predominantly holiday destinations, but also some city destinations, as the carrier announced. Eurowings Europe is back in Salzburg

On Wednesday, the airline Eurowings Europe transferred an Airbus A319 from its home base in Vienna to Salzburg. The OE-LYZ then operated a flight to Palma de Mallorca and back. The medium-haul jet is now stationed in the city of Mozart. According to Salzburg Airport, Eurowings was the first airline to return after the Corona break. Three weekly flights to Düsseldorf have been offered since the beginning of May 2020. Lufthansa has also resumed the Frankfurt route in the meantime.
