From September 6 to 8, 2024, Vienna will become the center of international coffee culture when the "Vienna Coffee Festival" celebrates its tenth anniversary in the Marx Halle. Since its first edition in 2015, the festival has developed into a major event for coffee lovers and professionals. With a promising program and impressive highlights, this year's anniversary promises to be an unforgettable experience.
When the "Vienna Coffee Festival" first took place in the Ottakringer Brewery in 2015, it was a small but promising step into the world of coffee culture. "Back then, we started with 1.500 visitors. Today, after nine years and a move to the Marx Halle, we attract over 12.000 guests," explains organizer Günther Gapp. The festival has developed from a niche event into an important meeting place for the international coffee community.
The last few years have seen the festival grow continuously. With over 80 exhibitors and more than a hundred brands, the Vienna Coffee Festival is a fixture in the event calendar. The combination of high-quality coffee offerings, accompanying food, drinks and music has made the event a meeting place for young and old. "We not only offer first-class coffee, but also a comprehensive supporting program that celebrates the enjoyment of coffee in all its facets," Gapp continues.
The role of the festival in coffee culture
Coffee culture in Austria has changed a lot in recent years. "In Austria, both the quality of coffee and its consumption have risen to a new level," emphasises Oliver Goetz of SCA Austria. Coffee culture has developed into an artistic discipline, as shown by the successes of Felix Teiretzbacher and Martin Wölfl, who both emerged as world champions in various disciplines. This development is supported by events such as the Vienna Coffee Festival, which serves as a platform for coffee roasters and shops.
"The Vienna Coffee Festival has helped to increase awareness of high-quality coffee," says Wolfgang Binder, operator of "Café Frauenhuber". "There are more roasters, more coffee shops and a greater awareness of the quality of coffee. We are proud to be part of this growth."
Highlights of this year's festival
The tenth Vienna Coffee Festival will feature a diverse program. Special highlights include:
- Martin Wölfl and filter coffee: The newly crowned world champion Martin Wölfl will talk about his experiences in the World Brewers Cup and focus on filter coffee. Wölfl, who won the title in Chicago, wants to popularize filter coffee, which has so far received little attention in Austria.
- Private Coffee Tour: Peter Scheiber, an experienced city guide and coffee lover, offers a guided tour through the Viennese coffee scene. His passion for coffee and Vienna will offer participants a unique experience.
- The Vienna Coffee Award: For the first time, this year's event will feature awards for outstanding achievements in Viennese coffee culture. The awards ceremony will take place on the first day of the event and will be held in cooperation with the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.
- Rainbow Bagel Workshops: Burgenland baker Ewald Kaiser will create exclusive rainbow bagels for the festival. These colorful bagels symbolize the diversity and solidarity that the festival represents.
- Espresso Bar and Guest Shifts: A special espresso bar will be curated by Otto Bayer, while Markus Brun from Gota Coffee Experts will show how coffee and spirits can be harmoniously combined with his “Coffee in Good Spirits” session.
