The smallest country in the European Union, Malta, has been practicing the strictest entry regulations in the Schengen region since mid-July 2021. Tourists can only enter the country if the complete vaccination can be proven by means of an EU certificate. Otherwise, you have to pay 1.400 euros and stay in hotel quarantine for 14 days.

Malta only accepts vaccination certificates with a QR code. These must have been issued by an EU member state, the United Kingdom, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United States of America, Serbia, Gibraltar, Jersey or Guernsey. People who have been vaccinated in the Republic of Malta are also allowed to show their traditional paper vaccination certificate - but not everyone else.

It does not matter whether the vaccination certificate with QR code is presented on paper or on the smartphone. In addition, the passport or identity card must be shown as proof of identity. Malta also requires the completion of a PLF form. The EU platform is used for this.

The “world map” of the Maltese government only knows the colors “red” and “dark red”. If you come from “Dark Red” you need a permit to enter the country. This must be done in advance [email protected] Can be requested. The current classification, including a rather complicated explanation, can be found under this link on the homepage of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Malta entry requirements at a glance:

Who can enter Malta without quarantine?

  • A full vaccination is necessary from the age of 12. At least 14 days must have passed after the last dose.
  • Children under the age of 12 must have a negative RT-PCR test (72 hours old or less). Over 12 years of age, entry is only possible fully vaccinated without quarantine.
  • Children under six years of age are exempt from the obligation to test.

Which vaccines are recognized?

  • Anyone approved by the EMA. Specifically, these are: Moderna, AstraZeneca (Caution! Indian license production is not recognized!), Johnson & Johnson and Biontech / Pfizer.
  • Cross vaccinations are accepted

What happens when you want to enter the country unvaccinated?

If you have only one vaccination or no vaccination at all, entry will be refused. In the best case, a so-called rejection takes place and you have to leave the country immediately with the next flight. You are not allowed to leave the airport.

You have to go into a 14-day hotel quarantine. You have to pay 1.400 euros for this, food and drink not being included. Furthermore, 120 euros have to be paid for a PCR test. The room may not be left during isolation.

Where can I read the official version of the regulations?

The Office of Deputy Primeminister has the official ordinance in English provided under this link.

Does the PLF form have to be filled out online?

In the near future. At the moment the paper alternative is also possible with this link be used. The electronic PLF form, which can be printed out or presented on the smartphone, can be found under this link.
