Despite low demand: AUA wants to flee Dash 8

Regardless of the fact that the machine type DHC Dash 8-400 is currently proving to be the ideal workhorse on the Austrian Airlines short-haul route for the extremely manageable demand, the company is sticking to the phasing out schedule. By the end of the first quarter of 2021, the turboprop aircraft should literally “get away”.

In the current 2020/21 winter flight schedule period, however, the DHC Dash 8-400s have a lot of work to do, because Austrian Airlines confirmed on request that they are increasingly relying on this model. Incidentally, the Airbus A319s should also leave the fleet - as planned - in the coming year. The number of turboprop aircraft at AUA has meanwhile shrunk to nine.

A spokeswoman explains on this topic: “Nothing is currently changing in the timing of the Dash and A319 phasing out. As previously announced, the phasing out of the nine remaining Dash is planned by Q1 2021 and the phase-out of the A319 is also planned for the course of next year. Details are not yet fixed here. We are now increasingly relying on the use of smaller aircraft models in the winter flight schedule, that is correct. However, our goal for 'normal' flight operations continues to be to lower our unit costs and thus also to use larger aircraft models. In addition, of course, it also makes more ecological sense. "

It is incomprehensible how stupid people are explaining that an airplane with 76 seats of which 30 are occupied is ecologically inferior to an airplane with 180 seats of which 30 are occupied.
The bean counters should all be thrown out as quickly as possible, not even elementary school students are that stupid to believe the nonsense.
The unit costs are irrelevant in times like these, that should be made clear to those responsible.
Just to mention briefly, for flights the unit costs and the costs are the incurred per seat-kilometer offered.
Now you should calculate with the costs of the respective flight, smaller planes with the same number of passengers as a plane three times as large cause lower costs regardless of flight and landing rights, fuel consumption, maintenance and personnel costs.
That makes sense even to the dumbest environmentalist whom you call on the scene.
So AUA board of directors come up with a better argument, as stupid as they want to sell the people, they are again not.

I can only agree with the comment by scrap metal flyer, he speaks from my heart. Immediate dynamic route network innovations are required, point-to-point, where there is a natural need, with the right aircraft, regardless of who in the LH Group / partners is doing it cost and demand-oriented. In my opinion EW also needs Q400 or CR9s capacities this winter, certainly hardly any A320s. Perhaps it is time that the LH shareholders should consider whether the current management might not be overwhelmed with the challenges before it is too late for the share ...
If the HUB business model is to continue to exist, then this is currently and for the time being only possible with small devices in Europe, until times get better again. The focus must also be on the few business travelers and urgent private trips, which in Corona times have to be offered as day trips in Europe, if possible, which is then paid properly. Where are the real entrepreneurs in the management who take the reins in hand?
People and resources are plentiful, and good customers are there as soon as they have to or can immediately. The offer has to be right, even in a reduced form, why not just start on Tuesdays and / or Thursdays, for example? (Entrepreneurial route network lateral thinking please!) I know it's not an easy task, but to believe what it was like it will soon be again is not very likely at all ...
