The airline Turkish Airlines has put the incorporation of regional jets, which was announced some time ago, on hold. Both the Airbus A220-300 and the Embraer E195-E2 were evaluated, but it was decided that neither type would be ordered.

The two aircraft manufacturers have been courting a possible major order from Turkish Airlines. The carrier intended to increase the route network with the help of regional jets. In the course of communicating the latest quarterly figures, however, it became known that the Turkish aviation company had put the project on hold – at least for the time being.

According to the carrier's management, the cost-benefit calculation would not have been positive. The fact that there is currently only one engine manufacturer for both models has played an important role. In concrete terms, this means that it makes no difference whether the order is placed with Airbus or Embraer, as both models are equipped with Pratt&Whitney engines. Turkish Airlines is likely to address recent problems, including those at Tanzania Airlines have led to partial grounding, have deterred.

Whether the Turkish carrier will pursue the regional jet project again at a later date is currently completely open. In the short and medium term, it is unlikely that Embraer 195-E2 and/or Airbus A22-300 will be purchased.
