The Independent Flight Attendant Organization (UFO) is critical of the amendment by the European Parliament's Environment Committee to expand the EU emissions trading system (EU ETS).
From the trade union's point of view, this would lead to a shift in traffic flows and the corresponding emissions to countries outside the EU.
“The proposal to expand European emissions trading would have serious consequences for Europe as a location for air traffic and its employees, because it leads to an unequal distribution at the expense of European carriers. For this reason, we appeal to the EU parliamentarians to reject this amendment by all means,” said Daniel Kassa Mbuambi, CEO of UFO.
Not only UFO, but also other German and European professional associations and trade unions in aviation see the danger of distortion of competition and thus ultimately the destruction of European jobs, the prevention of the effective limitation of CO2 emissions, since the emissions are withdrawn from the regulatory sovereignty of the EU would become.
“We now urgently need a fair design at international level within the framework of the CORSIA agreement in order to make a truly sustainable contribution and avoid carbon leakage. Special regulatory approaches for a limited geographical area will not help to achieve the climate goals that have been set. Rather, the distortion of competition resulting from the amendment will ensure that good European jobs disappear and are created outside the EU under worse conditions. The EU Parliament must take action here,” adds Kassa Mbuambi.
Under the amendment to expand emissions trading in aviation, approved by the Environment Committee, it would apply to all flights leaving the EU. So far, only flights on routes within the EU have been recorded. After the decision in the environmental committee, the vote in the EU Parliament is now pending.
